USA Triathlon - Level 1 Certified Coaching
Kina Athletic Systems is pleased to announce that Kirt Nakagawa has recieved a USAT Level 1 Coaching certification (good through December 2007). Kirt has competed in over 40 Triathlons, from sprint distance to 1/2-IronMan, 5 Marathons (PR 3:18), and dozens of 10ks and 1/2-Marathons.
Kirt's coaching philosophy centers around 5 main points:
Taking the Strategic Approach to Fitness
One of my strongest beliefs is that the successful, long-term integration of a fit lifestyle requires long-term focus (i.e. a gradual vs. a short-term approach). I’m most interested in working with individuals who are willing to adopt a long-term approach to fitness, and attempt to develop them optimally, paying close attention to avoid injury and overtraining. If you are only looking for the fast track to fitness ( “8 weeks to your best marathon on 30 miles a week”) I am not the best coach for you.
On the other hand, if you are beginning to view your health and fitness as aspects of your life that you want to permanently integrate, and you're looking for a triathlon or distance running coach, please read on...
An Intelligent Approach to Training
An intelligent approach means taking a realistic view of the athlete’s abilities, goals, and resources. Next, developing a specific plan for success, with feedback from the athlete and continual monitoring of the quantity and quality of the athlete’s training.
From a coaching perspective, the intelligent approach means not only watching the numbers (easier using the software I developed for triathlon-specific training), but also monitoring the athlete’s state of mind, overall health, and attitude. Allowing for adequate rest, an occasional injury, or work and family commitments is crucial to building peak fitness at the right time.
Every Athlete is a Unique Individual
Individualization of training plans follows from taking the intelligent approach to training. Even though several athletes may have similar abilities, they may have differing goals, time constraints, and adaptations to training. Thus, every athlete is coached on a one-on-one basis, and no cookie cutter plans are provided.
All training plans are developed within the framework of the atlete's unique situation and are reviewed monthly.
Balance
Balance involves taking the big-picture perspective of what you are doing, and making adjustments as necessary. Balance involves all aspects of your training, including your diet, your school or career demands, family obligations, and the training environment you live in.
Needless to say, this approach requires lots of communication, honesty, and trust.
Having Fun
The deep sense of satisfaction you feel after achieving a long-term goal is great, but what if you could do that and enjoy yourself along the way? Wouldn't that be ideal?
In addition to developing training plans, I try to educate athletes about themselves and get them to relax and have fun.
